Time to declare a climate emergency

MORE than 10,000 South Australians signed a petition, tabled in parliament, calling on the state to declare a climate emergency.

Margaret Hender, 70, of Modbury Heights, said she started the petition with a few friends in 2019, when former Greens MLC Mark Parnell’s motion to declare a climate emergency passed the upper house. Together they decided the next step was the lower house and sought the 10,000 signatures required to table an issue in parliament.

“We had people of a wide range of ages and walks of life signing,” Ms Hender said.

“The general public is getting very concerned about the climate emergency and frustrated because we want governments to act faster really.

“So it’s not like it’s a narrow band of people anymore, (the concern is) quite widespread in the community.”

Opposition Climate Change spokeswoman Susan Close tabled the petition and gave notice of her intention to call on parliament to declare the SA climate emergency.
